The total matters more than the headline

Which deal has the lower final price?

Compare the same item and quantity after one discount, shipping and estimated tax. A larger percentage discount can still cost more when delivery charges or a higher starting price outweigh the saving.

How the estimate works

For each option, subtract one percentage or dollar coupon from the item price, with a minimum subtotal of zero. Estimate tax on that discounted item subtotal, then add shipping. This simple estimate does not tax shipping, combine multiple coupons, include memberships or assume rebates have been paid. Merchant checkout determines the actual total.

A worked example

These are hypothetical prices. A $50 item with 20% off and $8 shipping costs $48 before tax. A $50 item with $5 off and free shipping costs $45 before tax. The smaller advertised discount leaves the second option $3 cheaper.

What about two coupons?

The calculator uses one coupon per option. Compare alternatives separately unless the merchant explicitly allows stacking. For a fixed $10 discount versus 20% off on the same eligible amount, the item-price break-even point is $50 before shipping and tax.
